Balancing The Hecticness Of Reality & Life

September 16, 20252 min read

For over a decade, I’ve prioritised good nutrition, meaningful relationships, regular exercise, inner calm, fresh air, and gratitude. Imagine how incredible life would be if we embraced these values every single day. Picture a world where each morning begins with a nourishing meal, heartfelt connections, a bit of movement, moments of peace, deep breaths of fresh air, and a mindset filled with thankfulness.

But life isn’t always that simple, is it?

Last night, after a long day of lecturing and teaching, I was completely drained. On my way home, I stopped at a service station and bought a bag of chips—something I hadn’t done in over a year, as I’ve been following a ketogenic diet. That small indulgence, though, was a wake-up call. It made me realise just how busy and overwhelming my life had become, to the point where my wellness priorities had taken a backseat. Funny how something as small as a bag of chips can make you stop and reflect!

Balancing the demands of work and personal life is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth the effort. Here are some strategies that might help:

Strategies for Balance

Re-evaluate your priorities

Striking a balance between work and rest is key. Take a step back and adjust your schedule to include downtime. Rest is just as important as productivity.

85% is enough

You don’t need to give 100% all the time. Aiming for 85% allows you to conserve energy and avoid burnout. Perfection isn’t necessary—progress is what matters.

Get quality sleep

Make sure you’re getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. A well-rested body and mind are essential for overall well-being.

Prioritise "me time"

Set aside time for activities that bring you joy, whether it’s meditation, gardening, walking, or something playful. These moments recharge your spirit and add happiness to your day.

Use positive language

Reframe how you think about healthy habits. Instead of saying, “I have to exercise,” try saying, “I get to move my body and feel great.” A positive mindset can make all the difference.

Ask for help when needed

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to reach out to friends, family, or colleagues for support. Sharing responsibilities can ease the burden and help you regain balance.

Tomorrow is a new opportunity to reset and embrace life with intention. Next time, I hope to buy a bag of chips as a well-deserved treat, not as a result of exhaustion. Let’s remember to cherish the little joys, take care of ourselves, and find balance amidst the chaos of daily life.
